Certainly we can train people to use MYOB – but for what purpose?

“I want to help a friend out, so I want to learn MYOB!” she replied. That’s great, but what does she know about bookkeeping?

“Oh, I’m not a bookkeeper, I just want to help my friend with MYOB, I don’t want to do bookkeeping – I just want to use MYOB!”, was her response.

It’s because of people like her that has led the government to introduce legislation to tighten up the bookkeeping profession.

That’s not the first time we’ve had an enquiry like that. Why do people think that by learning to use an accounting software program, they suddenly become bookkeepers?

Are we reaching the stage where MYOB should place a warning on the box that users of the software will not automatically become bookkeepers?

Really, that’s like you saying that you can run a restaurant because you ‘ve cooked breakfast for the family at home.

I have just finished reading the book, and I love it

It gave me a lot to think about, like how much to charge

Your example about the restaurant was great. It is true, that you can order the same meal in 2 different restaurants and get the same food, but pay different prices due to tablecloths etc

I liked the box at the end that lists different trades and businesses

I would have liked to have seen more checklist-style pages e.g what to tell a client in an initial conversation

Something that could be printed and run through whilst on the phone to the client or eve ticked off in a face-to-face interview

I think that is where I am more hesitant, the idea of selling myself

I have the ambition, the knowledge, the resources, but the unknown of how other people conduct their first meetings is a bit daunting

If I could see one or two, I would probably think “That is how I would of done it” or “I will use that tip”

It may sound easier than said being a bookkeeper working from home

Bookkeeping from home, working alone, can quickly become a lonesome experience.

If you’ve been used to working in an office, surrounded by other people but now find yourself working on your own, at home, or maybe in your clients’ offices whilst they are absent, it can become very challenging.

You miss the mindless chit chat of an office and the general social interaction as well.

So you consider the expense of renting serviced offices, and then are faced with unnescessary expenses of being in a “real office” for the sake of being surrounded by other people

Or you could just turn on the radio and have some “mindless chit-chat” happening in the background

Bookkeeping from home is, for many self-employed bookkeepers, a change of lifestyle, and everything that is different to your normal way of life seems odd at first.

It may sound easier than said being a bookkeeper working from home, but just think of the great benefits. Travel time is reduced (walking down the hallway), you can be your own boss, you don’t have to get permission to take time off, plus many other benefits

Meet up with a client over coffee for an hour

If you feel lonesome working from home running your bookkeeping business, then consider taking a break during the day. Organise to meet up with a book-keeping client over coffee for an hour during the day, which can help deal with the isolation of being at home. You need a break anyway.

Perhaps you can become more involved in local community organisations, which is also a great way to widen your circle of business acquaintances

The average bricklayer is quite capable of doing his own books if he puts his mind to it. He (or she) doesn’t necessarily need a lot of training or experience. It all depends how complex the accounts are.

The bricklayer would probably do as good a job bookkeeping a as a professional bookkeeper would do bricklaying

Many people choose to do their own bookkeeping, simply because (most people think) it really isn’t rocket science. So why do people need self-employed bookkeepers?

The difference between DIY and getting a professional in for many things is quality and time.

Maybe you can add a new electric socket in your house. It might take you 3 hours in total. Or you can get an electrician, and because he is a professional, he does it day in and day out he’ll can do it far neater and in maybe an hour.

Take that to Bookkeeping and the question we ask people who do their own bookwork is how much it does it cost them?

How valuable is their time? What else they could be doing to grow their business instead of doing their books. A plumber may earn $80 per hour, but he can’t earn that if he’s spending 4 hours doing something that may take a professional bookkeeper less than half that. So he has to weigh up $320 of lost income vs. $100.
