Do Book-keeping Flyers Work?

do-book-keeping-flyers-work.gifI tried some flyers to find bookkeeping clients, but they didn’t work!

That’s a common response from bookkeepers wanting to know how to get their business started.

Let’s just think about that statement. “The flyers didn’t work!” – What does that mean exactly? When you design the flyers, or instructed someone else to design the bookkeeping flyers, what result were you looking for?

So many people see junk mail in their letter box everyday – they pick it up and walk straight over to the recycle bin.

Then there’s the people that “love” the junk mail, and read everything that arrives in their mailbox.

This means that the flyer promoting your bookkeeping business is amongst a handful of others – most people would spend only a couple of seconds glancing at each flyer, so you need to GRAB their attention

Then what? You drown them in information, because this is the ONLY chance you have in pitching your bookkeeping services.

WRONG!

What’s the purpose of the flyer? Not to answer all the questions, but to raise the curiosity to the next level.

Remember this: You are selling the sizzle – not the sausage

There’s more about this in our Ebook “How To Find Bookkeeping Clients”.

So You Want Bookkeeping Clients?

“Too busy to take on new clients”

“Yes, please”, replied the bookkeeper. “Please will you help me find some more bookkeeping clients”

Often we will receive calls from clients that need someone yesterday, or even last week – so we need to find a bookkeeper to service that client immediately

Two weeks ago a client contacted us wanting Quickbooks training – we contacted the bookkeeper who then agreed to accept the contract

Last week we get a call from the client asking what happened to the bookkeeper – it seems that some bookkeepers are just too busy to find a couple of hours to earn some easy money.

“Having too many clients is a great problem”

The bookkeeper didn’t get back to us, so we then contacted another local bookkeeper – who was very keen to take a new client.

Two days later, after we send a follow-up email, we got a curt reply saying that they were too busy to service this client.

This is a concept that we really do not understand: We do whatever we can to service new clients, knowing that our regular clients are quite happy for us to shuffle around our timetable.

That new client could be worth $1000’s to our business. Having too many clients is a great problem to have. Having too many clients gives you the option to review your client list and decide which clients are giving the best return on investment

You get yourself and Australian Business Number and start your short-term contract.

Advertising For Bookkeeping Clients

Does advertising for bookkeeping clients work?
Short answer: No
Long Answer: Yes

An advertsing guru once said that 50% of all advertising works – the problem is knowing which 50%

Advertising For Bookkeeping Clients
Have a look in:
1) your local paper and you’ll see bookkeepers advertising for clients.

2) the yellow pages directory, and you’ll see advertisements for bookkeepers.

3) your letter box and glance through the junk mail.

In each case you’ll often see bookkeepers advertising for clients. Does this mean that you should use these same strategies?

Many bookkeepers follow these marketing strategies to advertise for bookkeeping clients.

Ask yourself this question: When is the last time you’ve picked up the local newspaper, yellow pages directory, or junk mail flyer to call a business or service that you require?

In most cases the answer is:”I can’t remember!”

So why will people respond differently to your advertisements? The point is exactly this – most bookkeepers do what they see most other businesses do, and then they wonder why they get the same results that most other businesses get – zero

Even large companies and multi-nationals are realising that traditional advertising isn’t working – and they have budgets far bigger than your annual income to throw at advertising campaigns

Advertising For Bookkeeping ClientsAs bookkeepers you’ve probably seen the cost advertising efforts of small business owners when you are doing their bookwork – ask them what response they’ve had from those campaigns, and they’ll more often tell you that they only get a response if they run the advertisements each week or fortnight for the whole year.

Have a look at your advertising budget and then decide whether you should throw money away just on the off-chance that you’ll get a result, or decide that you should go ahead and invest in a practical hands-on simple manual that has a whole heap of marketing strategies [How to Find Bookkeeping Clients] that can turn your business around in no time.

Clean Your Driveway

Advertising For Bookkeeping ClientsWhy are you reading this paragraph when we’re talking about advertising for bookkeepers?

Well, have a look at the flyer that came with our junk mail. Can you see the name of the business? – Doesn’t really matter, does it.

What is the mssage that the flyer is broadcasting? That’s clear as day : “Clean your driveway” – How simple is that – then there’s the phone number (blocked out in RED)

Compare that to 98% of other flyers that are broadcasting their business name and give little idea of what they are trying to promote. Read our book How to Find Bookkeeping Clients to learn more about advertising for bookkeeping clients

How To Start Bookkeeping

Wanna know how to start bookkeeping? Read our Ebook “How To Find Bookkeeping Clients”.

There’s many courses available in your local college of education, or online, about how to learn how to do bookkeeping.

They will probably help you with learning all the technicalities of bookkeeping. Do they still teach double-entry bookkeeping? Who knows what they teach, judging by some of the bookkeepers that contact us looking for clients.

Unfortunately the mere fact that you have a qualificatiion does not really set you up to start your own bookkeeping business.

New legislation in Australia recognises the importance of experience, though it’s uncertain what the legislation actually means. Apparently you need 1400 hours of experience to become a registered BAS Agent. Does that mean 1400 hours of bookkeeping, or 1400 hours of BAS preparation?

Which then leads to the question: At what stage does day – to – day book keeping become BAS preparation?

Having a driving licence does not make someone ready to enter the Formula One Grand Prix. Indeed there’s probably many capable drivers that have not taken a driving test, just as there are many extremely capabale and skilled bookkeepers that have no formal qualifications.

Over the years we’ve helped many bookkeepers kick-start their bookkeeping business

The biggest challlenge for many would-be bookkeeprs is gaining the very valuable experience needed to become a contract or self – employed bookkeeper

Once you’ve gained that experience, you need to find clients – that’s where we have helped bookkeepers like Simone and Margie in Perth, Western Australia. From zero, we’ve helped them build their businesses upto a steady $12,000 per quarter turnover.

Not bad for a part-time business!

There’s Jeremy on the Gold Coast, who’s pushing to the $75,000 p.a limit and GST registration, and Kathy, on Brisbane’s Southside, who’s also reaching that magic number.

David, in Melbourne has been working hard with his business after we gave him a helping hand over the first few hurdles of just getting the first couple of clients.

Good Impression To Start Your Bookkeeping Business

A lady (we use the term loosely) who calls herself a bookkeeper, contacted us from a suburb just south of the river in Perth, WA.

Attention Perth Bookkeepers: Established bookkeeping business for sale – t/o $60k+ p.a (part time) CONTACT US for details

She’s been struggling to get clients, and was asking us for help. She then complained that when she learned that if we were to help her, she would have to pay for our services.

After a couple of weeks she contacted the Bookkeeping Team P/L again, deciding that she probably did need some help in finding some bookkeeping clients.

Right now there is an excellent opportunity for an experienced bookkeeper who wants to walk into an established bookkeeping business that’s turning over in excess of $60k per annum part time. CONTACT US for details

The first attempt at speaking to the struggling bookkeeper, she was on her way to a funeral, and would call back. A week later (by which time presumably the funeral had finished) she still hadn’t called back. So a follow-up phone call was made.

This time she was too busy to talk, because it was her birthday, and she was preparing for a birthday party. Nothing wrong with that – so when would be a good time to call her, or was she really interested in pursuing this anyway?

“F@#K @#F” was the response

Mmmmm – we are sure glad that we didn’t go to any trouble to help her with her bookkeeping business.

If that’s the way that she conducts herself on a professional level, maybe she should look in the mirror and see why she’s struggling to find book keeping clients for her fledgling business.

Marketing Your Bookkeeping Services

We have a service whereby we help experienced bookkeepers source clients – we do not work with every bookkeeper, and neither do we take on every client – we are looking to get the right / client / bookkeeper teamed up, so that everybody wins. … more details here

What is involved in the Bookkeepers Marketing Program?

The Bookkeepers Marketing Program is designed for bookkeepers who are starting, or who already have their own bookkeeping business, tailored to your business.

Marketing Your Bookkeeping ServicesIt’s designed for bookkeepers with knowledge and experience in doing bookkeeping. We do not train you in how to become a bookkeeper. We’ll help you through the hurdles and obstacles involved in getting your bookkeeping business operational.

This is not a franchise. You do not sub-contract to us as a bookkeeper, you will be contracting directly to the business owner / operator who is needing bookkeeping services.

Ask any small business owner, and they will tell you that certain sacrifices have to be made short term, for a long term gain.

We have many bookkeepers who have been very grateful for the service we offer, as they have found it to be a great boost to their business, and their income. These bookkeepers have gained insight into promoting their businesses, how to manage their time more effectively, and other tips that may have taken them years to learn.

They appreciate that our service is not “just about getting three clients”, it’s about gaining knowledge to build a self sustainable business, that has the potential for an income in excess of $100k. See our Bookkeepers Marketing Program for more details
