Wanting To Start A Home Based Bookkeeping Business

Question: I’m a CPA in commerce working for a major corporate, and am currently on maternity leave and wanting to start a home based bookkeeping business.

I have around 20 yrs accounting experience and looking to start my own bookkeeping business. I am looking to test the waters with a view to eventually giving up my job and becoming self employed.

Do you want to start your business while on maternity leave, or are you intending to go back to full-time employment?

When clients engage bookkeepers, they expect a 100% commitment from that bookkeeper, it’s not a case of “let’s try it and see if I like it”.

Just like your employer has extended you the privilege of keeping you on maternity leave – seems like your commitment isn’t as solid. When you are ready to make a 100% commitment to your own bookkeeping business, then contact us and we’ll help you get started.

How Do I Get Bookkeeping Experience?

You think you’re ready to go it alone? You’ve worked for a large company, you know all about bookkeeping! Are you really ready to go out there on your own?

We help bookkeepers experienced in using MYOB or Quickbooks source new clients – if that sounds like you, then we are here to help!

Many small business owners are looking to outsource their bookkeeping needs – they do not use the more advanced accounting software programs that are found in large companies, so you need to have current experience using MYOB or Quickbooks.

You can do a short course at TAFE to refresh and / or learn MYOB / Quickbooks. Then you need to gain some experience using that software.

When you’ve mastered MYOB or Quickbooks you’ll be in a better position to start your own business – and then we can help you.

Bear in mind that when a small business seeks a bookkeeper, that bookkeeper will be expected to work very quickly, accurately and efficiently- all without supervision. So you will be on your own with no one to help you or answer any bookkeeping questions.

Without experience using MYOB or Quickbooks its doubtful that you are adequately prepared to start your own bookkeeping business.

You could, of course, consider spending $20k + on a bookkeeping franchise, but that still won’t give you the experience using MYOB or Quickbooks – and then there’s the ongoing costs in royalty/license fees etc, and still not guarantee of finding any clients

Maybe you can contact some local accountants or larger businesses that may be advertising for junior bookkeepers, and gain experience that way

Nothing beats the School of Hard Knocks!

Good Luck

How to start a bookkeeping business at home

A home based bookkeeping business is a service to small businessmen who have neither the time nor the expertise to keep sufficient records for themselves. A plumber or piano tuner can make more money plumbing or tuning than doing their book work — and they’re good at plumbing and tuning!

The home bookkeeper’s clients drop off their receipts and sales slips for posting to a ledger or computer data bank. The client is provided monthly statements and information for his yearly taxes, plus any other contracted services.

Help Starting A Bookkeeping Business

We received an email yesterday from a lady who’s working fulltime as a bookkeeper for a company, and has now decided she wants to set up on her own.

Why spend (waste) money and time trying to reinvent the wheel?

So she contacted us for help. There’s nothing unusual about a request like this: We get many enquiries from bookkeepers who want to start their own business. (more…)

Teaches Bookkeeping, But Struggles To Find Clients

Had a phone call this morning from a gentleman that wants some help to find him bookkeeping clients.

He said that he’s got 26 years experience in bookkeeping, and teaches bookkeeping as a lecturer. What is incredible about this, is that he has no idea how to help his students get started as bookkeepers themselves. He has no knowledge of marketing – which is great for our business!

We’ve had a very positive reaction from bookkeepers who understand that time and effort is involved in finding (and securing) clients. The bookkeeping teacher who is training students to become bookkeepers has no idea how to find clients, and is asking me for help. His main concern was that there’s so much competition and potential clients run a mile at his hourly rate!

We’ve never had that problem – astute business owners understand that bookkeeping is an investment not an expense – contact us for details

Bookkeeping – A Great Home-Based Business

Bookkeeping can be a great home-based business for the right person.

If you’ve decided you want to be a bookkeeper, it’s a simple low cost start-up business, you can operate from home, but you may have to work at different clients’ premises.

When a small business seeks a bookkeeper, that bookkeeper will be expected to work very quickly, accurately and efficiently- all without supervision. So you will be on your own with no one to help you or answer any bookkeeping questions. The business owner does not want to pay for your training – s/he’s looking for a professional to get the job done ASAP therefore reducing the bookkeeping fees

Do you feel that you can cover all aspects of bookkeeping? Contract bookkeepers are expected to go and “sort out the mess” and generally need to do everything from setting up a bookkeeping system, to basic data entry, Bank reconciliations, generating reports, preparation of accounts for the accountant – accounts receivable /payable etc.

Some bookkeepers may have been doing bookkeeping for a number of years, but only certain aspects, so they may not be fully prepared to go out on their own.

We have a service whereby we help experienced bookkeepers source clients – we do not work with every bookkeeper, and neither do we take on every client – we are looking to get the right / client / bookkeeper teamed up, so that everybody wins.
